My Birthday 2010

I did not celebrate my birthday this year and the year before and the year before and the… I have never celebrated my birthday in a special way.

My mum use to boiled 2 red eggs with a fried chicken wing or drum for me every year when I was small. As I grew up, I guess I work too hard and travel too hard that the yearly ritual with red eggs stop for 13 years! I requested my mom to do it for me this year and I am grateful my mom still able to do that for me.

I like to thank all my friends and family who wishes me on my birthday. Only one word to describe you guys, AWESOME!

Love

Dumping Festival & The mystery of the standing eggs

Today (8th Jun) Chinese is celebrating a very special occasion, it call dumping or Duan Wu Jie in mandarin. I have forgotten how the history comes to dumping, but according to children story there was this special poet in Chinese history that lost in the river. Worrying for his remains eaten by sea creatures the villages threw some sort of dumpling into the river so the sea creatures will not harm his remains!

What’s a story! Okay, please don’t listen to me I may get the story wrong :)

But one thing for sure, after century of dumping foods onto the river and still the remains of this so call “special” was never to be found and that’s when we modern folk decided to dump into our stomach instead! ROFL!

I’m sure you’ll love it!

Chinese Dumpling, Dumping Festival

Chinese Dumpling, Dumping Festival

The next most exciting story would be the standing eggs ROFL! Have you tried it yourself? To stand an egg thus “standing egg”? hot? Excited? Let watch the next video just taken this afternoon… may look intriguing :)

So what do you think? I was actually amazed by it. There’s in fact no secret to how you can stand an egg! On a not so special occasion to stand an egg needs skill and you can make it happen. If you want to make it stand without even a trial run than you would want to does it sharp at 12noon on Dumping Festival day. For some of you in other part of the world, you can try it on the very first day of spring or maybe autumn!

In the name of science, the reason of why an egg standing is because our surface are pointing directly at the sun on these day. Of cause gravity plays important roles in your standing eggs too :)

I hope you will enjoy your next standing eggs and have a good day, god bless!

Breakfast: Century Eggs

I have given you salted eggs from my previous post. Now, it’s time for another type of egg! It’s call Century egg.

Century egg

Century Eggs

This egg is special. it’s almost black in color and almost transparent. If you find the color tasteless, you maybe right! I never like Century egg and I can’t find the reason why should I love it. You probably won’t like it too :)

During my photo taking session, I tried one slice, pretending I love it and know how to appreciate it. I have to! Other wise the restaurant workers would think that I’m mad taking photo of the eggs but won’t eat it.

I harm my appetite during the making of this post.

Salted duck egg

Salted duck egg was my favorite and it reminds me how hard my dad work to support nine of us until his last breath. Every bit and pieces of this salty duck egg has it own story of hardship.

Never the less, salted duck egg could be one of the best preserved food products in Chinese history.
