EOS Experience Seminar 2008 Kuching

This is my first time attending a so call DSLR enthusiast seminar. I really hope for something extravaganza but I guess I’m just feeling fine after all. I am sure if the second seminar would still be the same topic as this one, I count myself out!

I expect I would find more tips and trick for better and stunning photography. Obviously the seminar didn’t fulfill my needs although I must admit am impress with the speaker’s knowledge in photography, their connection with the well known artists are awesome!

Nevertheless this seminar is well suited for newbie and amateur. Topics includes

  • Working with color management between camera, PC and printer.
Not a new input for me but a refresher. Mr. Kaz Chua (speaker) talk about few thousand ringgit equipment to calibrate screen color – maybe alternative free true color calibrator software could be useful for poor guy like me! (software calibration may not be 100% accurate but not a bit deal for experimental)Canon is not just produces cameras, in Malaysia Canon probably the largest printing equipment distributor. There’s no surprise if you have a Canon camera with Canon printer, your photos should look really stunning and hassle free with your PC calibration. (maybe)

Anyway, be gentle with RGB and CMYK color profiles :) If you are too worry with your picture output, covert your picture to CMYK profile using Photoshop before printing. Good luck!

  • Printing resolution (DPI)
If you are using 72 DPI that’s for web! During my time working with my friend’s company, I design and working with grayscale ads in 200 DPI on a daily basis. My Celeron processor is suck at this point, crawl slower than snail! These day core 2 duo processor make these job an ease!
  • White color balance
I am so lost in this topic. Since the speaker did not really give a proper point on how to have better control over white color balance while taking photo, if you are a pro, care to share? appreciate your input.Mr. Kaz explains using AWB normally work fine.
  • Noise
I pick up a better idea on how to use ISO from the Copal Digital’s staff. I visited them too often. I have become too familiar to them. In fact I was invited by them to join this seminar for free (I heard the seminar cost RM150). Thanks dude!

There’s few other thing that were mention in the seminar by another speaker, Mr. Teoh. As advice by the Pro, invests in camera body and lenses should worth be worth it! In exchange you get quality pictures and prints. The speaker notice that not many Kuching people using Canon EOS 1D mark lll compare to Kota Kinabalu’s seminar! I am not surprise though, Kuching people is always “kiam Siap” – am I right? No? Kuching has a very low spending power that’s the fact.

Since the seminar was held in 5 stars hotel, lunch was fantastic! I didn’t take any photo from the buffet table. I am a photographer today you see not a blogger hahahaha

Interesting enough

I met my school mate that I have not been in contact for the past 13 years! Adam is still the soft spoken guy that I know since primary school. Went to New Zealand to further study, he is now married with 2 children and a job as an accountant. He introduces me to Jason who was in fact a school mate too! I never heard of him before this, not in school too LOL. Jason is working for TM. This is really handy! The next time I like to complain I’ll look for him hahahaha

I think I saw this cute blogger, she was really energetic :) she look alike my ex-staff. Very close!

Last but not least, I bum in this very tall dude who work for Canon. He helps setting up my office machine. seat with him you will – he will start his story all night long! I think the best story I heard from him so far is the story of a rich people in Philippines who spend their time BBQ-ing at the cemetery during weekend!

It’s time

We get to take photo of a model, at first everyone is reluctant to walk up to the stage and take photo but once we did the rest follows and snapping away! I pretended knowing how to shoot the whole session… ROFL.

I did have my embarrassing moment! I was trying to a get name card from Mr. Teoh because he is too busy talking he ignored me completely! I feels that he is not being fair too, he choice to do camera setting for higher end Canon camera and people who hold entry level – he ignore them completely too.

Next year, give us more models to shoot!

What I have learned? My camera is no way to take good shot without proper lenses and flash especially in indoor shot!

Photography is Expensive hobby!
